The Alamo was the site of a battle during the war for Texas independence from Mexico. Located in the center of San Antonio, the structure, originally built as a Catholic mission, was occasionally used for military purposes after about 1790. In opposing the Texas War for Independence (1835-36), Mexican Gen. Santa Anna and some 3,000 to 4,000 troops conducted a thirteen-day siege of the Alamo, where 187 Texans had retreated. From February 23 to March 6, 1836, the force led by William B. Travis and James Bowie defended the fortress with limited supplies and ammunition. On March 6 the Mexicans stormed the fort and killed all defenders, including frontiersman Davy Crockett. Women, children, and a black slave were spared. The heroic resistance of the defenders galvanized Texans. Six weeks later, led by Sam Houston and shouting "Remember the Alamo!" they defeated Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto and won their independence. That's the history of The Alamo.
Alamo is commonly used in naming a business in Texas. A lot of successful business have the word Alamo included in their name. At one time there was a business in San Antonio named Alamo Plumbing Supply but they were bought out by Ferguson Enterprises, a large, publicly traded corporation based in Great Britain whose sales in the United States are now on the decline. In any case email us here at Alamoplumbing.com if we can assist you with any of your plumbing supply requirements.
